Satsuma Designs is a local, woman-owned business who came to me when they we were ready for marketing photography of their brand new clothing line. Our goal was to create a suite of images that tell the story of the summer linen collection that they could use on their website and for social media.
Pre-Production
After our initial call where I gathered as much info from Jennifer as I could, I created a treatment for the project. This treatment transformed the information she gave me into cohesive visuals that brought together the overall creative direction, model looks, styling, props, proposed shoot schedule, location ideas, and project estimates. As all of these elements came together, we decided on how many models we would probably need and I put out a model call and took care of all coordination and communication with them.
Location Scouting
We knew that we wanted a location that looked like a farmer’s market, but didn’t have the budget to permit and shoot at one of the Seattle markets. I visited and emailed a number of plant nurserys and we found one that was willing to work with us! This one was perfect because there was a whole covered area of plants and flowers where the light was still amazing. Which we desperately needed because it ended up raining during most of the time we were shooting at this location! That’s a Seattle spring day for you.
I also scouted a few neighborhood parks to ensure there was easy parking, no construction, available bathrooms, tree coverage (in case of rain), and plenty of open space.
Products
We had many products to shoot in the linen collection. The hero piece was the button down shirt, but Jennifer also created a harvest apron, crossbody tote, zippered pouch, makeup roll, napkins, and a scrunchie. Part of staying organzied on my end and ensuring that we were getting proper coverage of the products was creating a detailed shot list. My shot list broke down the person, location, props, and product needed for every variation. When the chaos of shoot day came around, I was so happy to have that list to rely on.
Shoot Prep and Creative Direction
Since this was a marketing photography project with a lifestyle focus, I wanted to create stories for each of the locations and products. I gave Jennifer 7 options and she chose 3 final set ups. We wanted to show how these products fit into your life and your summer activities.
Shoot Day
A few days before, I sent out model releases, props list, and call sheets to Jennifer and the models. They knew when to arrive, what to bring, where to park, what to wear, and how their makeup and hair should look. We didn’t leave any detail to chance, which is so important during a shoot day!
